How do you study the Bible? PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 24 February 2008

I'm concerned that most churches and Christian leaders teach people the Bible but they may not necessarily be teaching them how to study the Bible. Christians may be able to spit out information about doctrine or various Bible passages, but they are not able to be shaped by Scripture.

Rather than just teach the Bible, we need to be teaching how to study the Bible and how to be people who are sensitive to the voice of God through many means, especially through Scripture.

It is this obsevation that led me to put together Knowing God's Word . I'm concerned that too many people do not know how to read and study the scripture on their own. The words of their pastors or Bible teachers are all that they have to go on. Don't get me wrong. It's not that I don't appreciate the Bible teachers in our midst. It's that we need to be equipping and teaching people to learn the Bible on their own.

One of the tragedies that I see in how people connect with God in their devotions is that they pass over the rich resources available to us. There have been people walking with Jesus for 2000 years who have great wisdom and insights into who God is and how to connect with God. These men and women are some of the heroes of the faith and they are available to mentor us through their writings.

I try to always have a literary mentor in my life of devotions. Though I do connect with God through the Bible, I find that having a good author walk with me in my devotional life allows me to see beyond my particular situation. Books are a timeless resource. The author is always available to speak to us through his or her writing.

A couple years ago I had the privelege of meeting Dallas Willard. At the end of our lunch appointment, I thanked Dr. Willard for his time and I said to him, "Dr. Willard, thank you for walking with me on my Sabbaths through your books. You have been a mentor to me." He smiled and thanked me.

If you want to get started, consider grabbing a book authored by Henry Nouwen or Eugene Peterson.
